WARNING: Beware of Cowboys selling “cheap” rugged phones
Some big rugged phones sites and TradeMe sellers are trying to flog-off phones that don’t work in rural areas, and which may not work anywhere once Vodafone and Spark switch off the 3G cellsites next year – and they’re lying to their customers about it, still promising “compatible with all NZ 3G/4G networks”.

Turn your phones into walkie-talkies
Most of our rugged phones have a programmable button on the left side. Most ordinary smartphones DON’T have this.
The button can be easily allocated to a push-to-talk (PTT) service like Zello or even enterprise-level systems like Microsoft Teams or Tait TeamPTT, so that your crew can communicate on site or from anywhere in the world using their rugged phones as two-way radios.
